Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas has not panned out during his time in Cleveland thus far.
His defense has been terrible, he has not been as good at the offensive end as others believed he would, and he has reportedly caused some locker room problems. All of a sudden, Cleveland’s splashy free agent doesn’t look so splashy.
But Thomas is also coming back from a major injury. He has played a limited number of games this season, and he has to find his way on a new team. So perhaps it’s not crazy that Thomas is struggling to find a good groove.
Because of his struggles, Brian Windhorst of ESPN believes Thomas should be with Cleveland’s G League team, the Canton Charge, at least for a while.
“Right now, the best place for Isaiah would be in the G-League,” Windhorst said on the ESPN’s WKNR, via Uproxx. “He’s costing the Cavs games right now. It would be better if he was costing the (Canton) Charge games.”
There are those that think having a stint in the G League as an NBA player is a bad thing. Almost as if it means that NBA player isn’t really an NBA player.
But Windhorst thinks it should be a place where injured players can rehab and get back in rhythm without costing the NBA team position in the standings. He sees it the same as in the minor leagues in major league baseball, where players receive rehab assignments before going back to their team and no one bats an eye.
That idea makes a lot of sense, and it would be beneficial for Thomas to spend some time getting right while still playing basketball.
