When Derrick Rose agreed to join the Cleveland Cavaliers, it came as a surprise to many as they did not emerge as a favorite to land his services early in the summer. However, what came more of a shock was when the 2011 MVP signed a minimum deal for $2.1 million, especially coming off a solid campaign last year with the New York Knicks.

Former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury was one of those who couldn’t believe Rose is only getting paid that amount. He took to his Twitter account to post a series of tweets, calling his signing a “crime.” He even went as far as saying that there are some who got a bigger contract but they don’t deserve it at all.

Rose was reportedly commanding a salary anywhere between the $18-20 million range heading into the summer, but found it difficult to find a team willing to extend that kind of offer to him. Free agency quickly dried up, and the two teams he apparently wanted to join, the L.A. Clippers and San Antonio Spurs, both passed up on him. He ultimately joined the Cavs, as he believes he has the best chance of winning with them.

The Chicago-native is only 28-years-old, and despite the numerous knee injuries he suffered in the past, he has proven that he can still play at a very high level. Since his current contract is only good for one year, he can consider next season as a chance for him to prove to all his doubters that he’s still one of the league’s best players, which could reward him with a bigger deal next summer.
