One of the under-the-radar storylines during the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ deep playoff run to another NBA Finals appearance has been the future of general manager David Griffin with the organization.
There have been rumblings about other teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, and Orlando Magic all at one point each expressing interest in acquiring his services. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland, Griffin is expected to seek a significant pay raise this upcoming offseason.
Griffin will seek a significant raise — he’s made less than $2 million annually, according to sources, which is low, especially for the GM of a team that has played in the last three Finals and is a defending champion.
Griffin, whose contract is set to expire on June 30, has helped play a significant part in forming one of the best teams in the league that has now reached three consecutive NBA Finals while winning three straight central division title and at least 50 games in the regular season.
This has subsequently drawn much interest across the league from the Hawks and Magic, who both denied an opportunity to speak with Griffin. The Cavaliers are expected to allow him to be interviewed by Bucks following the 2017 NBA Finals, but it appears that the team is moving on with their general manager search to other potential candidates.
With other possible destinations off the table, it will be interesting to see what Cleveland does with Griffin as he’s at least in line for a huge raise with the organization.
