Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr gave his players the chance to step into his shoes Monday night, allowing the likes of Andre Iguodala and even Draymond Green to draw plays for the team against the Phoenix Suns. Asked about his take on Kerr’s odd coaching antics, Cleveland Cavaliers mentor Tyronn Lue said he is not interested in doing the same, while jokingly alluding to the well-known Twitter conspiracy that LeBron James is the one who’s pulling the strings on the sidelines for the Cavs.
Via Royce Young of ESPN:
Ty Lue on Steve Kerr letting the players coach last night: “I wouldn’t do that. They already say LeBron’s coaching the team anyway, so if I give him the clipboard they’re really gonna say that.”
Tyronn Lue is probably the most belittled coach in the NBA today. That’s despite the fact that he has guided LeBron James and company to winning a league title in 2016 and an Eastern Conference championship win in 2017. But with James seeming like an omnipresent figure for the Cavs, some people just can’t help but think that the four-time MVP also moonlights as the team’s head coach and general manager.
Looking at it from another angle, these rumors of “coach LeBron” and “GM LeBron” are only further evidence of James’ fingerprints on the franchise.
For the meantime, Lue will test his coaching acumen again this Tuesday night, when the Cavs take on Russell Westbrook and the rest of the Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
