A new team has emerged in the race for Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin, who is currently in the final year of his contract. Earlier reports indicated that the Orlando Magic were hot on Griffin’s trail, but this time it’s the Milwaukee Bucks who are interested in his services.
The Bucks actually lost their previous GM, John Hammond, to the Magic earlier this week, basically eliminating Orlando in the hunt for Griffin as they now have their man. Now, instead of promoting assistant GM Justin Zanek, Milwaukee is scouring the market to find a replacement. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the Bucks have not reached out to Griffin or the Cavs to speak, nor have they asked for a formal interview.
Griffin and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert have engaged in discussions about a contract extension over the past few days, sources tell Vardon, but an agreement has yet to be reached. Those who are close to the team believe that the two will ramp up their negotiations during the NBA Finals or shortly after.
The Bucks are certainly a talented young team — one that most aspiring GM’s would love to lead. However, Griffin has already established himself quite well with the Cavaliers and their fans. After all, he is the man who orchestrated the end of Cleveland’s 52-year championship drought. We’ll just have to wait and see how the situation develops.
