The Cleveland Cavs are still looking to make some moves to shore up their roster as the NBA offseason continues. The Cavs have been most recently tied to free agent wings Peyton Watson and Jonathan Kuminga, both of whom would give Cleveland some much-needed wing depth after the team swung and missed on LeBron James in free agency.
Recently, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com broke down one move the Cavs are mulling in an attempt to make such a transaction easier.
“…the Cavs continue to discuss various trade packages involving (Dennis) Schroder, seeing if there is an opportunity to slightly reconfigure the roster or gain financial flexibility, which would help their pursuit of free agents Jonathan Kuminga and Peyton Watson,” reported Fedor.
Schroder is no stranger to being traded, closing in on an NBA record for the highest number of teams during a career. The backup point guard had some moments for the Cavs this past season, but ultimately, if Cleveland wants to maximize their chances of winning, Watson or Kuminga would likely give them a better shot.
Wing depth was a major problem for the Cavs during their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the New York Knicks this past year. While Kuminga has been inconsistent dating back to his days with the Golden State Warriors, and Watson remains somewhat of a wild card after showing impressive flashes last year with the Denver Nuggets before getting injured, Cleveland could be getting desperate to make a move in order to keep pace in a suddenly revamped Eastern Conference playoff picture.
In any case, the Cavs will learn their schedule for the upcoming season when it is released later this week.
