Cavs fans and the organization will never forget the team’s first ever championship ceremony on October 25th, 2016. Quicken Loans Arena was the place to be to celebrate and watch the Cavs start the season off right. One member of the 2016 Cavs championship team, however, was not present for the ceremony and game.

Point guard Mo Williams was not in the arena for the ceremony and the Cavs didn’t announce his name for a ring. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, who was answering some questions about the Cavs including one about Williams’ whereabouts during the ceremony, the 13-year veteran and the Cavs have a pretty strained relationship at this moment.
Bringing Williams to The Q never crossed the Cavs’ mind. He’s not welcome, after picking up his $2.2 million option, deciding to retire the day training camp opened, and then electing to have knee surgery without filing retirement papers or negotiating a buyout with the Cavs, forcing them to keep him on their roster and pay him (while they search for a team to take his contract off their hands).
Considering the situation Williams put the Cavs in by occupying a roster spot and opting into his contract, but not officially retiring from the NBA, the Cavs are understandably frustrated with him. Williams had offseason knee surgery, and took a shot at the Cavs in an Instagram post because he claimed they never cared about him or his health.

Williams is now recovering, but he hasn’t filed the necessary paperwork to officially retire. Williams and guard Jordan McRae have been linked to multiple trade rumors as the Cavs have been in search of a backup point guard. The Cavs haven’t been able to complete a trade as they watch Iman Shumpert handle backup point guard duties, which has led to a 6-0 start to the season.
