Now that free agency is officially underway, teams across the NBA landscape are searching for ways to bolster their respective lineups, including the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, the Cavaliers have expressed interest in veteran free agent point guard José Calderón. The Cavs are said to be targeting the 35-year-old Spanish native for a backup role, as it is still unclear whether or not they will re-sign Deron Williams.
Calderón, a three-time Olympic medalist with the Spanish national team (two silver, one bronze), split last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks, where he averaged 3.4 points (41 percent shooting from the field) and 2.1 assists in 13.4 minutes per game. A gifted ball-handler and facilitator, “The Ocho”, as Calderón is known, could be a viable option for the Cavs’ style of play.
The Cavs, who are without a general manager, well over the salary cap, and have but limited resourced to offer a free agent, seem to fancy Calderón. And according to Lloyd, the attraction is mutual.
