The Cleveland Cavaliers have been extremely shorthanded without their starting point guard in Kyrie Irving, leaving them with only one active point guard on their roster: rookie Kay Felder. Felder’s been very good for the Cavs, but he just doesn’t have that playmaking ability yet. The Cavs are surviving without a backup point guard thanks in large part to LeBron James’ ball-handling and playmaking abilities. However, the Cavs clearly need a point guard and they may be close to making a move with the trade deadline suddenly a month away.
While joining ESPN 850 WKNR in Cleveland, Cavs’ insider Brian Windhorst said that he expects the Cavs to cut Jordan McRae over the next couple of days.

McRae’s contract becomes guaranteed on January 7, so the Cavs are expected to release him before that deadline. This move would open up a roster spot for a possible backup point guard in free agency. The Cavs have been rumored to be watching a few point guards, but they won’t rush to make any moves just yet.
With the recent trade of Mike Dunleavy for sharpshooter Kyle Korver, the Cavs turn their sights on a backup point guard.
