As we cross the midway point of this year’s NBA season, the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves in a bit of a rut, as they’ve lost five of their previous seven games.
It’s a known fact that the defending champs need a viable backup point guard to run their offense off the bench. LeBron James has made that crystal clear, recently saying: “It’s my last time saying it. We need a point guard.”
One former NBA player seems to be more than willing to serve as Cleveland’s backup floor orchestrator. Nate Robinson, who last played professionally for Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel, has recently tried making his case for the job. Last night, after Cleveland’s disappointing 124-122 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans in The Big Easy, Robinson took to Instagram to reiterate his intentions, saying, “Do I gotta put my number on ig @KingJames ??? Cos I will until you call me lol #holdat.”

Robinson could indeed be worth taking a look at. Most fans of the game will remember Robinson as the only three-time slam-dunk champion in NBA history. Over the course of his 11-year career, Robinson averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game. “Nate,” as Robinson is commonly known, was the 21st pick (Phoenix Suns) in the 2005 NBA Draft out of the University of Washington. The 5’9″ point guard played his best pro basketball in the 2008-09 season as a member of the New York Knicks, where he averaged 17.2 points and 4.1 assists in 29.9 minutes per game.
Robinson has spent time with several teams, including the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, and the New Orleans Pelicans – leaving loads of highlight clips in his wake.
Whether or not the Cavs make a move for the 32-year-old Robinson can only be speculated on at this point. However, one thing is clear, the defending champs need a reserve point guard. Robinson is more of a shot maker than a shot creator, but it seems he’d be more than willing to facilitate for the Cavaliers if given the chance.
On an ESPN post earlier today, Robinson also commented on an ESPN Instagram post saying in the third person that he’s available.
Love the comment. pic.twitter.com/5DJQie0ast
