On Saturday, J.R. Smith, who once hurled a bowl of soup at an assistant coach, returned from a one-game suspension meted out to him by the Cleveland Cavaliers and did what JR Smith always does: knock down threes. Playing the Denver Nuggets at home, Smith climbed up the Cavs’ all-time three-pointers made list, when he hit one from downtown in the third quarter of the contest.
According to CavsNation.com’s Kenny Honaker, that three-pointer finally broke Smith’s tie with former Cavaliers big man Danny Ferry on the list. Smith entered the Nuggets game with as many Cleveland triples as Ferry, who had hit 543 in Cavs uniform.
J.R. Smith would add one more trey in the final quarter, pushing his Cavs three-point total to 545. Smith finished the game with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field (2-for-5 from deep), two rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in 35 minutes of action.
Unfortunately for Smith, his effort was not enough to help Cleveland get a win. The Cavs fell to Denver, 126-117 – the team’s second-straight loss; they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers last Thursday at the Quicken Loans Arena, 108-97.
Depending on how hot Smith’s hands are going to be for the rest of the regular season, he could get to as high as top four on the franchise’s three-pointers made list before this campaign ends. Smith is currently five threes behind Wesley Person (550), seven away from tying injured teammate Kevin Love (552), and 32 threes short of sharing the fourth spot with Daniel Gibson (578).
Ferry played for the Cavs from 1990 to 2000.
