It seems today’s NBA game has evolved into a faster-paced, three-point shooting monster. Gone are the days of multiple “bigs” patrolling the paint. Enter a new era of “stretch” 4’s and 5’s.
Most teams have multiple players that can drain the three-ball, including the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers. In fact, the three-point shot has become somewhat of a staple for the Cavs.
One player in particular who has been a major reason for Cleveland’s success from behind the three-point line this season is J.R. Smith.
After passing Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki (1,707) for the 16th position on the NBA’s all-time three-point field goals made list in a 104-81 win over the Detroit Pistons, Smith, seemingly unaware of his milestone achievement, spoke to members of the media.
Joe Vardon of www.cleveland.com recants Smith’s words in his recent article.
It’s good to know now, though. I guess I got to check to see who is up next.”
“I’ve always considered myself as one of the best shooters but to actually have the numbers to back it up, I mean, it’s something I rarely think about.”
“Swish,” as he’s affectionately known by his fans, recently passed Dale Ellis (1,719) for the 15th position on the NBA’s all-time leading three-point field goals made list. Smith, who now has 1,723 three-point field goals made to his credit (14th all-time), has continued to shoot the ball well from beyond the arc.
So, just how far will J.R. Smith climb on the NBA’s all-time three-point ladder? According to www.basketball-reference.com, Peja Stojakavic (13th, 1,760) and Rashard Lewis (12th, 1,787) are next in line. At number 11 sits Kobe Bryant with 1,87 three pointers made. With an ultra green light from his coaches and teammates, it seems the humble sharpshooter could crack the top-10 before the end of his career.
