Over the weekend, news came down the wire stating that Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving had requested a trade in a meeting with team owner Dan Gilbert. Now, the Cavs are exploring their options.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavs are expected to have a meeting with free agent point guard Derrick Rose in Ohio on Monday.
“Rose has been engaged in serious discussions on a one-year, $2.1 million minimum deal with the Cavaliers,” Woj writes in his recent article.
There are other teams interested in acquiring Rose, including the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the crafty ball-handler is believed to be leaning towards Cleveland as his favored destination.
The Cavs, who have been without an official general manager since David Griffin’s departure from the team earlier this summer, have been accepting calls with regards to trading Irving, but as of now, no deals have come to fruition.
Over the course of his career in the NBA, Rose, a 28-year-old former No. 1 overall pick and three-time All-Star, has racked up career averages of 19.5 points on 45 percent shooting from the field (30 percent from beyond the arc), 6.0 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 34.7 minutes per game.
In his 64 games played for the New York Knicks last season, “D-Rose,” as he has came to be known, averaged 18 points on 47 percent shooting (career-high 87 percent from the free-throw line), 4.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per contest.
The 2011 NBA MVP award winner underwent season-ending knee surgery in April. However, it seems he has recovered and is ready to start preparing for the upcoming season.
