In lieu of the announcement on Monday afternoon that the Cleveland Cavaliers have parted ways with general manager David Griffin after three seasons, the rumor mill has been churning about what could lie next for leadership in the organization.
An early candidate that has emerged has been former NBA star and LeBron James rival, Chauncey Billups. The name came up due to his personal standing with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and head coach Tyronn Lue. According to Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated, he has revealed an intriguing detail about Billups’ relationship with Lue.
The fact that there is already a strong connection between the two could be a huge determining factor in the team’s search for a new team president of basketball operations. The two sides are expected to meet in the coming days, and if Billups is hired he is expected to find the next general manager that can handle the day-to-day duties.
Although Billups has no front-office experience, he had recently interviewed for the Atlanta Hawks‘ general manager position. The former NBA Finals MVP has a strong reputation regarding his leadership skills that may have played a factor in him being considered for a front office job.
With the Cavaliers set to meet with Billups in the coming days, things could quickly reach a resolution.
