As most hoops fans know, Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving requested a trade in a meeting with team owner Dan Gilbert and newly-appointed general manager Koby Altman last month. Now, the front office is exploring their options.
According to several reports, Irving has a list of teams that he would like to play for, which include his native New York Knicks, the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Irving can make a list as long as he wants, but Gilbert and the Cavs don’t have to trade him at all, as he is still under contract for two more years.
The Timberwolves, one of Irving’s preferred trade destinations, have shown interest in a deal with the Cavs, but those talks have died down a bit in recent days. Why, you ask? Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 in Minneapolis reports that the Cavs simply want more than Andrew Wiggins in return.
The Cavs actually drafted Wiggins with their No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, just before LeBron James made his decision to “come home.” In his 82 games played for the Timberwolves last season, the former Kansas Jayhawk averaged 23.6 points on 45% shooting from the field, 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.0 steal in 37.2 minutes per contest.
For now, it seems Cavs fans will have to continue waiting for a decision with regards to Irving’s future.
