After about four months of waiting, Cavs fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the Cleveland Cavaliers have announced that they’ve re-signed guard J.R. Smith.
In a press release earlier today from Cleveland Clinic Courts, the 2016 NBA Champions announced the waiving of veteran point guard Toney Douglas in order to create a roster spot for Smith.

Douglas was among several other Cleveland camp invites who were vying for a spot on the team. The 6’2″ veteran was signed to a non-guaranteed deal on October 3rd to compete for a back-up role in the Cavs’ point guard rotation behind Kyrie Irving and rookie Kay Felder.
In five preseason appearances for the Cavaliers, Douglas averaged 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 11 minutes per game.
Jordan McRae, DeAndre Liggins, John Holland, Jonathan Holmes and Cory Jefferson are all competing for the final two spots on Cleveland’s roster.
The Cavaliers will play one more preseason contest on Tuesday night against the Washington Wizards inside The Schottenstein Center before their highly anticipated opening night ring ceremony on October 25th.

It’s worth noting that McRae is likely to make the roster. The Cavs like his upside as a young Jamal Crawford-esque player, and he’s been seen hanging out with Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert a lot. Although he didn’t do much last postseason, McRae was a part of the championship team and has a lot of potential. The Cavs could also opt to use a roster spot to sign a free agent on the market.
