Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard Collin Sexton is “very available” in trade talks this summer, according to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic. The Cavs aren’t expected to pay Sexton the max extension he’s looking for after a big third season, so they’re exploring trade options.
Evan Dammarell of SB Nation’s Fear The Sword is echoing this Collin Sexton reporting:
Collin Sexton averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 35.3 minutes per game in 2020-21. The 22-year-old shot 47.5% overall and 37.1% from 3-point range. Despite Sexton’s stellar play and Darius Garland’s improvement, there are questions about this backcourt’s ability to make the Cavs a winning team. There were even rumblings about some players having issues with Sexton’s style of play.
Cleveland went just 22-50 and owns the No. 3 pick in the draft, which could be used to draft Sexton’s replacement or perhaps used in a trade to acquire a veteran option in the backcourt. Lloyd even asked one executive of another team if a package of Sexton and Kevin Love could pry Ben Simmons away from the Philadelphia 76ers, and the answer was “no chance.”
Here’s more from Lloyd on Sexton’s situation:
Teams around the league are well aware of Sexton’s contract situation, which will hurt his value in trade talks. One source believed the Cavs should’ve traded Sexton last summer, knowing this was coming and didn’t believe the Cavs will get a pick in the top half of the draft for him because of the contract. The Cavs may not find a match and still bring Sexton back for next season, but it won’t be for a lack of trying.
It sure sounds like the Cavs are going to try to move on from Collin Sexton as they look to accelerate this rebuild forward. We’ll see if they’re able to swing a deal.
