The consistently-dropping morale of the Cleveland Cavaliers and its fans have now prompted head coach Tyronn Lue to do some tweaks in the lineup. Lue did not disclose any specifics, but Dave McMenamin of ESPN quoted the Cavs’ coach in saying “[He’s] gonna make a change.”
Whatever that change is, guard J.R. Smith could be a part of it. His move to the bench or to have a smaller role is long overdue, as he is just an appalling 5-for-31 from beyond the arc in the Cavs’ last seven games. Also, Smith is now more willing to accept a role in the second unit.
The bleeding just wouldn’t stop for the Cavs, and it’s getting more alarming by the day. The horrid defense has been there since last year, but lately, even the offense isn’t being reliable, as it is now constantly faltering during crunch time.
Following Tuesday night’s 114-105 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs, the Cavs’ disastrous stretch now have them losing 10 of their 13 games since Christmas.
Here’s what Lue told McMenamin and other reporters after Tuesday’s game:
“Some guys are frustrated because they missed shots. Some guys are frustrated because they can’t get their rhythm. Some guys are frustrated when they get scored on… But for the most part, [we’ve] just got to stay together and continue to play the game.”
More uncertainties are on the way, especially with the trade deadline fast-approaching, but everyone has to remember that there’s still plenty of time left. There are 36 games still on the Cavs’ regular-season schedule — one or two victories can make them get their mojo back.
