A couple of days ago, Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Channing Frye made a terrifying assumption that LeBron James has yet to peak this season. He even put a number on it, saying that the four-time MVP’s engagement stands at only around 80 percent. And you know what, Channing? The King agrees.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday before the Cavs played the visiting Sacramento Kings at Quicken Loans Arena, James was told about Frye’s assessment, which the 3-time NBA champ seconded, per Erik García Gundersen of USA Today.
“I like it, it sounds good. I could play better,” James said. “But I think right now I’m in a really good groove. For me every month I get better and better. I get stronger and stronger as the months go on. I want to continue to get better every month. This is December I’m at 80. January I’ll be at 85. Then I’ll be 90 in February. 95 in March. And hopefully in April I’ll be at 100 and hopefully continue until June.”
LeBron James is putting up a very impressive stat line of 28.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 7.9 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 58.4 percent from the floor, which is currently the highest mark so far in his career. James is doing all these while playing 37.0 minutes per game. How about that for 80 percent?
With the Cavs superstar regularly stuffing the stat sheet, it’s easy to forget that he’s 32 and is a few weeks away from turning 33. While most players begin to regress after hitting 30, LeBron James has managed to defy that narrative by playing arguably the best basketball of his still-going-strong career.
Imagine what he could do on the court once he’s fully engaged.
