Cleveland Cavaliers forward Jaylon Tyson is dealing with a right ankle sprain and has been ruled out for three consecutive games, including Monday’s matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tyson missed the first of the back-to-back against the Thunder, and is now confirmed to be missing the second game as well.

The forward was initially listed with a cervical strain before the Cavaliers changed his injury designation to a right ankle sprain ahead of Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Tyson last played for 18 minutes in the loss against the Atlanta Hawks, with head coach Kenny Atkinson recently alleviating fears of a potentially serious injury, per a post on X by Chris Fedor.

“He’s been on the court lately progressing well,” he said. “This isn’t going to be a long-term thing.”

Tyson’s absence has led to increased minutes for the likes of Mario Hezonja, Sam Merrill and rookie Meleek Thomas, with the latter making his first career start against Oklahoma City. The 20th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft appeared in 66 games last season, starting 44.

He made a major leap from his rookie year, averaging 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Tyson also shot at an impressive 44.6% from the three-point zone, the fourth-best mark in the league, while taking 4.5 shots per game.

As a result, the Cavs recently exercised his fourth-year team option, which makes him eligible for a rookie-scale extension in July 2027. Regardless, the 24-year-old has appeared in five games this season, but is yet to earn his first start, averaging 7.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists, playing an average of 20.8 minutes per appearance.

For now, Tyson will be focussed on regaining fitness as he attempts to once again be a regular part of the Cavs’ rotation.
