Evan Mobley only had two points in the entire fourth quarter of Wednesday night’s home game against the Phoenix Suns, but those were all the Cleveland Cavaliers needed to score a 90-88 victory.
Mobley drained a jumper from 14 feet out off a dish from Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell to break a tie and put Cleveland in front for good. After the game, Cavs head coach JB Bickerstaff praised Evan Mobley for that memorable game-winner that allowed Cleveland to extend its current win streak to three games.
While it was Evan Mobley who sank the game-winning basket, how Mitchell perfectly set that play up shouldn’t be entirely ignored. He drew nearly the entire Suns’ defense by invading the paint. Phoenix got completely drawn by Mitchell’s gravity that it took Mobley just a simple cut near the free throw line to get an unchallenged high-percentage shot. It was great recognition as well on the part of Evan Mobley, not to mention his composure to bury that shot which he could have easily overcooked given the short space between him and the basket.
Mobley finished the game with just six points on a salty 2-for-9 shooting from the field, though, he also had eight rebounds, an assist, and two steals in 32 minutes. He played poorly for the most part of the contest, but there’s a lot to like about his attitude in the clutch, as he was still able to gather himself for the biggest shot of the ball game despite a rough night.
