You can now add Cleveland Cavalier star Donovan Mitchell to the list of multi-sport athletes.
Or is he?
As cutdown day in the NFL hogged the headlines on Tuesday, Mitchell kept tabs on the final roster of the Cleveland Browns. The team is looking to return to the playoffs after missing out last year, and adding new weapons was imperative this offseason.
Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot noted that several undrafted free agents made Cleveland’s 53-man lineup, including a certain “Donovan Mitchell.” The honest mistake didn’t escape the Cavaliers star, who posted a hilarious reaction.
“Let’s get it @Browns,” wrote Mitchell on X, adding two laughing emojis.
Cabot promptly corrected her little error with a lighthearted reply.
“Sorry @spidadmitchell! Donovan just always automatically ends with Mitchell in my mind! It’s Donovan McMillon who made the Browns as an UDFA (but they’d probably love to have you too!),” said the Cavaliers insider.
Muscle memory much?
The 23-year-old McMillon is expected to be the backup safety on the Browns, who signed him in April. He went undrafted in this year’s draft after a stellar senior year at Pittsburgh, wherein he was named to the All-ACC Second Team.
As for the 28-year-old Mitchell, he will be cheering for the Browns when the NFL kicks off next month. He has ingrained himself in Cleveland since joining the Cavaliers in 2022.
The six-time All-Star has been an integral piece in the Cavaliers’ success in recent years. Last season, he led them to the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a 66-18 record, which was second-best in team history. He averaged 24.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.3 steals. They, however, lost to the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the playoffs.
Prior to Mitchell’s arrival, the Wine and Gold missed the playoffs for four straight years.
He vowed to bounce back this season after their sorry exit. But if that doesn’t work out, well, he can always suit up for the Browns.
