The Cleveland Cavaliers are definitely going through a rough patch right now. Not only are they 1-8 to start the new season, but there is also reportedly a power struggle going on between the front office and acting head coach Larry Drew. The good news for Drew is he has the backing of his players who happen to believe the Cavs should offer him a new deal.
Following the unceremonious exit of Tyronn Lue, the Cavs promoted Drew (he was the associate head coach) to the recently vacated head coaching position. Drew reportedly wanted to renegotiate his contract to make his salary more commensurate to his new job, but the Cavs’ front office hasn’t made a offer to his liking yet.
It appears the players are very much aware of the situation and feel Drew is being somewhat mistreated by the organization. According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, the players are getting behind their new coach, and the current standoff is doing nothing to help alleviate the team’s current problems.
The players back Drew. They think he needs a new deal, and because he doesn’t have one they feel there’s a power vacuum at the position.
This is getting very ugly. Unfortunately for the Cavs faithful, they have no choice but to ride out the storm with the hopes that somehow, someway these issues are resolved in the immediate future.
