The Cleveland Cavaliers appear to be on the verge of resolving their offseason’s biggest question. According to ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, the Cavaliers will complete a new deal with James Harden once the league makes the Peyton Watson trade official.
The sequence matters. Watson’s standoff with the Denver Nuggets ended when the sides agreed to a sign-and-trade involving the Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, and others, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Denver traded Watson to Cleveland and will receive an unprotected 2031 Cavs first-round pick and a 2032 second-rounder, while Max Strus heads to the Clippers.
Watson signed a four-year, $88 million deal that includes a player option and a trade kicker.
The Harden signing hinges on the Watson deal isn’t just a matter of timing, it’s a matter of mechanics. Because Cleveland acquired Watson through a sign-and-trade, the Cavaliers are hard-capped at the first apron for the 2026-27 season. With roughly $29 million remaining below that threshold, the front office cannot simply spend past it to accommodate Harden, making the structure of his next contract a delicate balancing act.
The good news for Cleveland is that both sides have long signaled alignment. Harden and the Cavaliers have been working together on a new deal that pays the guard fairly while preserving financial flexibility, with his representatives at Equity Sports having discussed two- and three-year structures.
Harden’s patience through the Watson saga is a big reason the pieces finally fit. He opted out of his $42.3 million player option in June, a move that gave Cleveland room to maneuver in free agency, even if their pursuit of LeBron James ultimately fell through.
Siegel notes Harden will take a discount to help the Cavs build around him and Donovan Mitchell. During the 2026 playoffs, the 2017-2018 NBA MVP averaged 19.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds across 18 games, helping the Cavs make a deep postseason run before falling to the eventual champions.
Now, with Watson set to slot in as the starting small forward alongside Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, Cleveland’s final order of business is locking Harden back in.
