The Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday signed Donovan Mitchell to a four-year extension worth $273 million. But the Cavaliers are reportedly keen on adding another high-scoring guard to the roster.
DeMar DeRozan got his wish after he was waived by the Sacramento Kings on Monday. DeRozan had been wanting to get out of Sacramento after a two-year stint. The Kings tried to trade the veteran guard, but no one bit. But now that he is set to become a free agent, DeRozan could be more attractive.
On “The Matt George Podcast,” it was revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat are the two frontrunners to get the six-time All-Star.
“The two teams that we seem to hear the most chatter about in terms of potential landing destinations for DeMar DeRozan are the Miami Heat, who of course just traded for Giannis (Antetokounmpo), and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are a team I long thought could use the services of DeMar, especially in that second unit off of the bench,” said George.
The Cavaliers are also in pursuit of LeBron James, and getting DeRozan, who has formed a solid friendship with the four-time MVP, could be a key sweetener.
Incidentally, James is also being chased by the Miami Heat. Of course, the 41-year-old forward has already played for the Cavaliers and the Heat.
George, meanwhile, noted that going back to his hometown could also be an option for the 36-year-old DeRozan.
“He is from LA, from Compton, very much a Los Angeles guy. We’ve always talked about the possibility of DeMar going home. Whether it’s the LA Clippers or the LA Lakers, it seems like the Clippers would be the more likely out of the two,” said George.
Oh, James has also played for the Lakers.
DeRozan averaged 20.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists with the Kings.
