Tyronn Lue is set to resume handling head coaching duties again for the Cleveland Cavaliers after being away from the position for nine games due to an illness. Lue is set to make his coaching return Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena for a home game against the Washington Wizards.
Although he’ll be taking over again as the team’s head coach, Lue does not want to make significant changes to avoid messing with the sustained momentum of the Cavs during his time away from the squad, per Nikki Goel of ClutchPoints.
Tyronn Lue says he will be delegating more to the rest of his coaching staff – especially after their performance during his absence.
The Cavs did not seem to miss Lue that much based on the way they played over their last 10 games. Over that stretch, Cleveland went 9-1 under the mentorship of associate head coach Larry Drew. The only blemish in Drew’s record came at the hands of the Miami Heat in a 98-79 road loss on Mar. 27. Since then, the Cavaliers ripped a four-game win streak that they will look to extend tonight against the visiting Wizards.
Apart from Drew’s steering, having someone like LeBron James on the floor greatly helped the Cavaliers weather the absence of Lue. In the last 10 games, James has averaged 30.1 points, 10.0 assists, and 9.6 rebounds. He scored 27 points in a 112-106 home win over the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.
Cleveland has won two of the first three meetings this season with the Wizards, though that loss happened during the two teams’ latest showdown on Feb. 22 at home, 110-103.
