Stephen Curry made an appearance again on the Dan Patrick Show Tuesday morning to discuss numerous basketball topics, including the possibility of playing a shortened season and even the four-way MVP race between himself, LeBron James, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook.
“I think [players] should have a portion of the vote,” Curry started off saying. “Obviously, we’re the ones playing against each other and we know who’s having the best year and who’s doing things that, you know, really stand out.”
Here’s how the voting works via ESPN:
Since the 1980–81 season, the award is decided by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first to fifth place selections. Last season, there were 125 voters and 119 of them voted Kevin Durant for MVP. Each first-place vote is worth 10 points; each second-place vote is worth seven; each third-place vote is worth five, fourth-place is worth three and fifth-place is worth one. In 2010, the NBA allowed one ballot to be cast by fans through online voting.
Host Dan Patrick then proceeded to ask Curry if he would vote for himself were it possible?
“Yes,” Curry replied.
But when asked who he would vote for if he couldn’t vote for himself or Klay Thompson, Curry surprised Patrick, saying he would vote for LeBron.
“But he’s not…it’s weird that he’s not in the [MVP] conversation,” Patrick said. “I don’t understand that, Steph. If he’s the best player in the game, and the Cavs are, what, gonna be a No. 2 seed and maybe one of the two or three favorites to win it all…are we tired of LeBron James, that story?”
Curry, who claims he doesn’t pay attention to any of that stuff, replied with:
“I don’t know, I don’t follow that closely. I thought [James] was up there,” Curry said. “… He’s obviously one of the most talented guys on the face of the planet.”
We’ll see who wins it down the stretch, but barring an incredible collapse by the Warriors and a major rise from LeBron and the Cavs, Curry seems to have this MVP race in the bag.
