As the Cleveland Cavaliers continue to search for additional players or “playmakers” to add to their roster, two new names have emerged as potential candidates.
According to an ESPN report from Marc Stein, the Cavs have expressed interest in Los Angeles Lakers point guard Jose Calderon as well as Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut.
They’re hoping/rooting/wishing for a quality veteran or two to pop onto the free-agent market via buyout after the Feb. 23 trade deadline passes.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Jose Calderon and Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut, league sources tell ESPN.com, have emerged as two players who greatly interest the Cavs in their search for bench help.
This comes with somewhat of a catch as the Cavs will unlikely be able to effectively trade for either, given their current cap situation.
The Cavs know trading for Calderon, Bogut or (Deron) Williams is highly unlikely given Cleveland’s various salary-cap and asset limitations. The best they can realistically hope for is that one or more of those three gets bought out after the trade deadline and eventually hits the free-agent market.
Stein goes on to write that Calderon seems the most likely of the three to become a Cav. Ultimately, the situation is complicated and unless the Cavs are willing to sign one of the free agents they recently worked out, they’re going to have to wait for another team to buy out a player or work to make a trade with another.
It will be interesting to see in the coming days if anything more develops from this.
