As most NBA fans know, the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the playoffs, leaving Paul George, who can become a free agent after the 2017-18 season, has an option in 2018.
By most accounts, it seems George, 27, would like to part ways with the Pacers. There have been several reports of the Los Angeles Lakers having interest in the four-time All-Star’s services. The Clippers and Celtics have also been keeping a close eye on the proceedings.
In an April episode of the “In The Zone” basketball podcast, FS1 NBA analyst Chris Broussard suggested that the Miami Heat would be the best fit for George.
Via Andrew Lynch of Fox Sports:
“I think, though: Miami,” Broussard said. “Best fit. You need to go somewhere where they know how to win. Where there’s a culture.”
“If I put Paul George on that team with a championship coach in Erik Spoelstra — I’m not going to say they’re better than Cleveland, but I think they’re right there close to Cleveland and certainly better than anybody else in the East.“
Miami could be a good fit for George, sure, but what if he were to join the Cavaliers? Broussard raised an interesting question in a recent tweet. If the Cavs were to be defeated by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, might they too have interest in George?
Obviously, a George-to-Cleveland deal sounds exciting, but it’s purely speculation at this point. The Cavs, who are already dishing out more dough than a Pillsbury factory, would have to make some serious roster decisions to accommodate a player of his caliber, making the scenario unlikely.
In his 75 outings this regular season, George averaged 23.7 points on 46% shooting from the field (both career-highs), 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.6 blocks in 35.9 minutes per game. The 6’9″ swingman also finished with a career-high mark from the free-throw line (90%).
It’s safe to say that any team would love to have George wearing their uniform, including the Cavs. We’ll just have to wait and see where he lands in the offseason.
