Without much doubt, Oklahoma Sooners guard Trae Young is this college basketball season’s best player. Young has taken college hoops by storm. He has been getting plenty of comparisons with Golden State Warriors spitfire guard Steph Curry. He has also gotten the attention of another NBA MVP in the form of Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, James expressed his total admiration of Young, who is not only leading the Big 12 in points and assists, but the entire nation as well.
Kyle Boone of CBS Sports quotes LeBron James:
“I’ve probably seen Trae Young play before you’ve seen him play,” James said on Monday. “I’ve seen Trae Young play ball since he was in eighth grade. He’s been a part of my camp the last few years before he went off to Oklahoma, so I know what he’s all about, and what he’s doing now is very special. Very special player. Can add a lot to any team if he decides to come out and come into the draft.”
Perhaps inspired by James’ words, Trae Young went out Tuesday and led No. 12 Oklahoma to an 85-80 win over the No. 5 Kansas Jayhawks in Norman. The super freshman scored 26 points and dished out nine assists. It’s a big win for the Sooners, who boosted their chances of winning the conference’s regular-season title with their fifth win in Big 12 play.
On the season, Young is putting up insane numbers of 30.5 points and 9.7 assists. He is shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from long range.
If the Cavs decide to keep their Brooklyn Nets pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, who knows, they might use that to acquire Young.
