David Griffin, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager, and team owner, Dan Gilbert, have compiled one of the greatest rosters we have seen in recent NBA history. The additions of Kyle Korver, Derrick Williams, Deron Williams, and now Andrew Bogut have the Cavs looking like the favorites to win the Eastern Conference and defend their championship crown.
The Cavs officially announced the signing of Bogut, a true 7-footer with four years of playoff experience, on Thursday afternoon. Over the course of his 12-year career in the NBA, the Australian-born big man and former No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft has recorded averages of 10.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.6 blocks in 29.1 minutes per game.
So, what does LeBron James think of Bogut being a member of the Cavaliers? What will he bring to the table? “The King,” as James is justly known, answered those questions after last night’s 135-130 road win over the Atlanta Hawks.
“Bogs (Andrew Bogut) is gonna add a lot to our team, not only protecting the paint but also screening and also his ability to pass the ball,” James said of Bogut. “He’s gonna give us another playmaker, so, it helps out a lot.”
Most Cavs fans will remember when James seemed to lash out about the Cavaliers’ need of a “playmaker.” James stated that the Cavs were “top-heavy.” Now, with all of these talented new faces on the team, things are looking up.
Bogut typically plays a strong game close to the basket, but it’s his ability to make accurate passes out of the post that makes him dangerous for opposing sides. Bogut sets great screens for his teammates, and won’t need to score loads of points (though he is certainly capable of it).
Multiple reports are indicating that Bogut will be available to play for the Cavs in Monday night’s home game against the Miami Heat. For now, though, he’s taking a few days to get his life in order. Being traded from one city to another can be a difficult process, as many players have learned in the past.
Coach Tyronn Lue has suggested that he isn’t sure how he’ll utilize Bogut’s services yet, but stated that he might insert him next to Tristan Thompson in certain scenarios (talk about cleaning the glass and rim protection, whew).
