The Cleveland Cavaliers have not had an active summer. Other than a deduction in the front office, nothing major has happened. The organization signed Jose Calderon, Jeff Green, and Cedi Osman, but did nothing more.
However, it’s hard to blame the front office. The Cavs already have $140 million in salaries and owner Dan Gilbert is paying a lot of luxury taxes. Due to this, the squad cannot get any better in free agency, reportedly causing LeBron James to be unhappy.
On the other side of the spectrum, their other superstar, Kyrie Irving, is understanding. In an interview with Maggie Gray of Sports Illustrated, Irving spoke about the Cavaliers’ offseason.
“I understand we’re in a very peculiar place,” Irving said. “We just have to, you know, make sure all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there. It’s just summer time, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA. Best to just observe and then see what happens, but obviously there are some things that I’m pretty sure our organization wants to do, and we’ll go from there.”
Irving has a lot of understanding for the Cavaliers’ front office. After the departure of former general manager David Griffin, the organization was in a rough spot. To compound their woes, Cleveland also missed out on potential deals for Paul George and Jimmy Butler before they got traded to Oklahoma City and Minnesota, respectively.
However, without any wiggling room, money wise, and sans a horde of tradable assets, expectations need to be leveled in The Land.
