This past Halloween, LeBron James held a party at his mansion in Cleveland and added to the ongoing “Warriors blew a 3-1 lead” gag that was prominent throughout the entire summer.
James had cookies in the shape of Golden State Warriors players, and cookies with the words “3-1 lead” on them that exploded throughout the internet in the days after.
This, of course, rubbed the Warriors players up the wrong way, and despite Steph Curry having a laugh about it, most took offense to the sly troll.
Surprisingly, new Warriors recruit Kevin Durant also chimed in about the whole situation via ESPN, and said he didn’t want to get involved between the bad blood between the two franchises.
“I’m a basketball player, bro. I’m a basketball player,” Durant told ESPN. “If you’ve got any disputes or any feuds or anything with anybody that plays the game, let’s just check it up. That really don’t mean s— to me, all the jokes.”
Despite the ongoing back and forth, Durant understands where both teams are coming from.
“I wasn’t here last year, but I obviously know from being on the team, you don’t want to see nothing like that [from Cavs],” he said. “Me personally, it’s just jokes because you still have to play. Just like I’m sure there were so many jokes that went on about Cleveland and LeBron over the years, and you still have to play on the court. So none of that s— matters until you duke it out on the court.
“I understand why anybody would [be angry], and I understand what LeBron is coming from. If you won a championship for your city and you did it in historic fashion, it’s something that you’ll never forget. So, no hard feelings. I understand where both sides are coming from, I guess.”
Durant has been thrown into the situation between the Cavs and Warriors when he joined the Dubs this summer. He may understand it on face value, but he’s yet to fully experience it.
KD has made a seamless transition into the Warriors system, and their chemistry is already great also, but maybe it’s because Durant himself blew a 3-1 lead in last season’s playoffs to those very same teammates, so perhaps they can relate.
The Cavaliers will meet the Warriors for the first time this season on today in a highly anticipated Finals rematch.
