And so the epic saga continues…
After a gentleman’s sweep over the No. 1 seeded Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals (4-1), the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are set on a collision course for an unprecedented third consecutive meeting in the NBA Finals.
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, or simply not a fan of sports, you know exactly how the first two rounds of this heavyweight bout unfolded. Now, it’s time to lay it all on the line for the ultimate rubber match.
After last night’s game, Cavaliers general manager David Griffin spoke to Fred McLeod of Fox Sports Ohio with regards to his team’s upcoming showdown with the Warriors. Griffin, the man who orchestrated the end of Cleveland’s 52-year championship drought last season, says he hopes everyone thinks “the Cavs have no chance.”
“I think they’re excited about it,” Griffin said. “I think they’ve certainly earned the opportunity. Obviously, the team we’re playing is as good as you can possibly put together. It’s going to be an unbelievable battle for us, but I think they love battling together. So the greater the odds, the better we seem to play together. We really do rally around each other in that sense, so I hope everybody says we have no chance.”
When asked how long he and his team would soak in their third straight Eastern Conference Finals victory, “Griff,” as he is known, says the Cavs will celebrate for one day, but then it’s back to work.
“I think they’ve been thinking about (playing the Warriors) for quite a while,” Griffin said. “I think these guys are going to take a day to really enjoy themselves, and we have a team that will certainly do that. They’ll play hard together on and off the court, so I think we’ll have a good night tonight and get back at it after the day off.”
Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set for a 9:00 p.m. tip-off inside Oracle Arena, with ABC having live telecast rights.
