With training camp just around the corner, the Cleveland Cavaliers are set to add more depth by acquiring a former highly touted prospect.

According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, the Cavaliers and Killian Hayes have agreed to a deal. Hayes will bolster the team’s guard rotation, which includes Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Lonzo Ball, Sam Merrill, and Craig Porter Jr.

Details of the contract have not been disclosed, as of writing.

The 24-year-old Hayes was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as the seventh overall pick in 2020 but did not make any significant impact in his four seasons with the squad. Last season, he appeared in six games for the Brooklyn Nets and averaged 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. He also spent time with the Long Island Nets in the NBA G League.

Long Island received a first-round pick and a second-round pick in next year’s draft from the Cleveland Charge in exchange for the player rights to Hayes.

Hayes is expected to provide energy and extra scoring off the bench for the Cavaliers. While his playmaking remains suspect, he can drive to the lane and create off the dribble. He also has the tools to be a pesky defender. The biggest concern is his efficiency, as he has only shot 38.3% from the field in his career.

His best season came in 2022-23, averaging career-highs of 10.3 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.4 steals in just 28.3 minutes per game.

The entry of Hayes could help the Cavaliers alleviate the exit of Ty Jerome, who signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Jerome provided instant impact in relieving either Garland or Mitchell, and Hayes could fill that role. He may not be as effective, but if he adapts to the system quickly and gets enough playing time, he could be a solid addition.

The Cavaliers are looking to bounce back after getting booted out in the second round of last season’s playoffs.
