The Cleveland Cavaliers’ pursuit of Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson has complicated another major offseason objective, potentially reshaping the team’s pursuit of free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Cleveland has recently joined the growing list of teams interested in acquiring Watson through a sign-and-trade. However, Denver’s asking price remains steep, creating another obstacle for a Cavaliers front office already navigating multiple roster decisions.
Scotto reported that the Nuggets remain committed to retaining Watson despite receiving interest from several teams.
“The Denver Nuggets remain interested in retaining restricted free agent forward Peyton Watson amid sign-and-trade interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Clippers.
Denver’s price tag in any sign-and-trade scenario has shifted to at least one first-round pick and one notable player, per multiple reports, and confirmed by HoopsHype.
As of now, the Bucks, Cavaliers, Hawks, and Clippers have not offered a first-round pick to the Nuggets in sign-and-trade discussions for Watson, league sources told HoopsHype.”
Scotto added that Cleveland’s interest appears more serious than that of some of the other reported suitors.
“The Cavaliers have recently entered the picture as noted above in this story, with their trade assets also outlined. Meanwhile, interest from the Hawks and Clippers is considered more exploratory than substantive to this point.”
The Cavaliers’ pursuit of Watson comes shortly after ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that Cleveland was “poking around” the 23-year-old forward, with those discussions also contributing to the delay in contract negotiations with veteran guard James Harden.

Watson has emerged as one of the league’s most intriguing young defensive wings thanks to his athleticism, length and versatility. Those traits make him an appealing target for a Cavaliers team looking to add another multi-positional defender after LeBron James departed in free agency to join the Philadelphia 76ers.
At the same time, Cleveland continues to pursue Kuminga, although that situation has become increasingly crowded.
Scotto reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves have entered the race for the former Atlanta Hawks forward alongside the Lakers and Cavaliers.
“Amid active sign-and-trade interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, along with the possibility of re-signing with the Atlanta Hawks, another suitor has expressed interest in free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.
After missing out on their pursuit of LeBron James, the Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed interest in Kuminga with their starting power forward spot up for grabs and their $6.06 million taxpayer mid-level exception available for the taking, league sources told HoopsHype.
While the Lakers have a significantly higher financial offer and longer contract on the table, and Cleveland can also offer a significantly higher salary via a sign-and-trade, Minnesota’s interest is still noteworthy, given the basketball fit.”
Whether Cleveland ultimately prioritizes Watson or Kuminga could define the remainder of its offseason. With Denver maintaining a high asking price for Watson and Kuminga drawing interest from multiple contenders, the Cavaliers may soon have to decide which versatile forward best fits their long-term plans.
