The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of another lengthy postseason run, one that, depending on the outcome, could be the last one of LeBron James career in The Land. Of course, free agency is a long way from now, and Cavs fans are hoping this year somehow results in an NBA Championship, convincing James to stay home.
A number of teams are expected to be in the running for James, and although every team would kill to have him on their team, there are likely only a handful of teams with a legitimate shot at James.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who has been covering LeBron James since his first go-around with the Cavs, joined Adrian Wojnarowski’s ‘Woj Pod’ to discuss a number of topics in the near-hour podcast. The final topic of discussion was James’ future, a lot of which will likely depend on what the Cavs do in the offseason. Although there isn’t too much they can do, they’re expected to have a very valuable draft pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Windhorst had a number of interesting things to say regarding the subject of James’ future and the pick.
“Let’s say they get lucky and hop up to number 3. I’m not sure that LeBron is that excited about, you know, playing with Luka Doncic even if that draft pick may end up setting the franchise in a great position in 2 or 3 years.”
Windhorst makes it sound as if, no matter what, James’ continued presence with the Cavs will depend on the draft pick not remaining with Cleveland, even if that pick allows the Cavs to build for the future with or without James.
In addition to the pick, James future, per Windhorst, also relies on the Cavs having hte best situation possible among all other teams interested in him.
“I think the #Cavs greatest situation is that there is no other great situation and that may end up keeping LeBron put.”
Free agency is still well over a month away, and there’s still a lot of basketball left to be played.
