The free agency period is creeping closer with it now being just over a week away, which has pushed further attention upon the pending decision that four-time league MVP LeBron James has to make concerning his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
There is still much that could change in the coming weeks, but it appears that James has honed on two possible landing spot as Dave McMenamin of ESPN has indicated that it is expected to between the Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
These comments further support what Brian Windhorst of ESPN had stated during the draft on Thursday night that it will likely be a choice between the Lakers and Cavaliers this summer. The Lakers have long been rumored over the last several months as a potential destination this summer. Los Angeles has become an appealing destination for several reasons as the team has positioned itself to be able to bring aboard two players on max deals while the roster is full of young promising talent.
There is also the fact that James has a home located in the Los Angeles area while it is believed that his son, LeBron James Jr., could possibly be put into school in the Brentwood district for at Sierra Canyon. Reports had also surfaced that his family has voiced their desire to either see him play this next chapter of his career in either Los Angeles or Cleveland.
Meanwhile, he has ingrained himself greatly with the Cavaliers that has seen him lead the team to four straight NBA Finals appearances and their first NBA Title since he returned for his second tenure. James also has a deep tie to the community through his honorable work away from the game. General manager Koby Altman has stated that he has had ‘good dialogue” with the 33-year-old’s management over last few days.
It is still quite early in the decision-making process, but the first marker in this entire situation will be whether he picks up the player option in the second year of his deal for the 2018-19 season. This could help set the table for what will be a major decision ahead for James in the next chapter of his career.
