There has still been no significant progress between Collin Sexton and the Cleveland Cavaliers with regard to his new contract. Both camps are currently at an impasse with the Cavs reportedly unwilling to meet Sexton’s contract demands.
At the moment, Sexton, who is currently a restricted free agent, has not received any offers from opposing teams. This could change very soon with reports now emerging that the Utah Jazz and the Washington Wizards both keeping a keen eye on the 23-year-old’s situation in Cleveland. This report comes via Cavs team insider Sam Amico of Hoops Wire:
The Jazz are closely monitoring the Sexton situation, and the Wizards are among those with him on their radar, sources said. The Cavs want him back. For now, though, the Cavs’ philosophy appears to be this: “Here’s our offer. Go ahead and see if you can do better.”
This shouldn’t pose a big threat for the Cavs, who can choose to match any offer Sexton gets from the market. As the above report states, they’re more than happy to take a waint-and-see approach with their young guard. They’re clearly in no rush here, and they know that they have the upper hand.
As for his part, this should be considered a good development for Collin Sexton. At the very least, he should be able to get some leverage with the Cavs now that opposing teams are showing interest. It seems that Sexton now has options available to him, which might just put a bit of pressure on Cleveland.
