With the Cleveland Cavaliers the owner of the fifth overall pick in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft, many believe that this is a great opportunity for the Cavs to acquire a young talent that could help them in their rebuilding process. As it turns out, however, the team’s front office is reportedly looking at trading away the No. 5 pick if the right offer comes along.
This report comes via Chris Fedor of cleveland.com:
The Cavs will be active this offseason. They will explore trade opportunities, using the No. 5 pick as bait. Sources say owner Dan Gilbert will allow the front office to take on future salary — if the move makes sense and the piece coming back significantly improves their chances either in the short or long term. But activity doesn’t always lead to action.
The Cavs have been rebuilding for a couple of years now, and as it appears, the front office is looking to fast forward the process. As indicated in the report above, the team might be inclined to acquire a player — perhaps a tenured veteran — that could help them now.
Their two best veterans in Kevin Love and Andre Drummond (assuming that they are not dealt during the offseason) are not exactly youthful, and their window — especially for the 32-year-old Love — is closing in. Adding a third piece to their team might just be what they need to be relevant in the East in the upcoming season, and the fifth overall pick could be an enticing prospect for potential trade partners for the Cavs.
