The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking for their fourth straight win as they are battling the Orlando Magic at Rocket Arena on Monday. It is their second meeting in their home-and-away face-off, with the Cavaliers beating the Magic, 119-105, at Kia Center on Saturday.
The Magic were on point in the first quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers, 32-22. But Cleveland increased its defensive intensity in the ensuing frame to get back into the game.
Evan Mobley personified their defensive mettle with a swat against Moe Wagner. In the process, he recorded the 500th block of his career.
The 24-year-old Mobley has been the Cavaliersā anchor on the other end with his length, mobility, and timing. He may not be as physical as other big men, but his defensive acumen is better than most. He is not the reigning Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) for nothing.
When Mobley entered the NBA as the third overall pick in 2021, concerns arose about whether he could adapt to the rigors of the league. While he was not jaw-droppingly impressive, he showed that he could stand his ground.
Last year was his breakout campaign. Aside from winning as DPOY, he was named to the All-NBA Second Team and the All-Star Game for the first time.
The Cavaliers are eager to find redemption after an early exit in last seasonās playoffs despite being the top seed. Mobley is a key piece in the plan. His numbers have dipped slightly, but his defensive presence remains formidable.
As of writing, the Cavaliers are leading the Magic, 61-56, at halftime.
