It looks like the Cleveland Cavaliers will have to wait a little longer to see point guard Derrick Rose back in action.
The Cavaliers announced Wednesday that Rose, who has been sidelined for some time with ankle injury, will not play on the team’s current road trip, per Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. It seemed like there would be a possibility that he would play.
Rose has not played for the Cavs since Nov. 7. In between then and now, he strangely took leave from the team and may have even contemplated retiring after being frustrated that he had to deal with yet another injury. But he later refuted those reports.
In the seven games he has suited up for this season, he’s averaging 14.3 points and shooting 90.5 percent from the free throw line, per Basketball Reference.
When Rose signed in the offseason, many thought it a curious move by Cleveland. Rose is not old in age, but with so many injury concerns throughout his career, it seemed like a risk to bet on Rose being even remotely healthy.
So far this season, Rose has proven the doubters right. And now that he will not play during the road trip, the question remains as to when he’ll return to play for the Cavs.
But waiting could be a good thing as well. With a player as injury prone as Rose, it’s best that he takes his time coming back and makes sure that he’s 100 percent.
If the team has any shot of possibly unseating the Golden State Warriors, the Cavaliers will need all the healthy bodies they have, and Rose at least can still produce and take some pressure off LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.
