Donovan Mitchell was officially welcomed into the Cleveland Cavaliers today. The All-Star had his introductory press conference as he enters a new chapter of his career with the Cavs.
Cleveland never seemed like a big suitor for Mitchell throughout the process. Mitchell revealed that, like many in the basketball world, he thought that would eventually be traded to the New York Knicks. The Cavs then stepped up and offered a deal that Mitchell’s hometown team didn’t match. Mitchell added that he still “could not be more happier” to be with the Cavs.
Although Mitchell would have done well in New York, the grass is greener in Cleveland and he seems to know that. The Cavs have more young stars than the Knicks do and were a better team last season. Mitchell will get the chance to grow with his young, star teammates and have a solid shot at competing for a championship.
Mitchell’s scoring abilities make him a great fit for a Cavs team that needs more scoring. He averaged 25.9 points per game last season and can shoot from deep, pull up to shoot and attack the basket with touch and with force. Cleveland should have no issues making the playoffs this season as long as the group stays healthy. But even then, they now have a quartet of young stars to rely on instead of just a trio.
The Cavs are going to be a fantastic team now that Donovan Mitchell teaming up with Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
