In the span of just about two hours, the Cleveland Cavaliers completely revamped their team.
Before Thursday’s trade deadline, the Cavs sent away six of their rotation players and brought back four in exchange. Among the players traded were Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade and Jae Crowder.
But, there are some holes in the roster since the Cavaliers traded all those players. It appears, however, that the Cavs have a solution for their next game just in case they don’t get all four new players to play in time, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
The Cavaliers really don’t have another choice than to bring two two-way players into the mix for one game, at the very least. Their new players are coming from other teams; they have to take physicals, book flights, make arrangements, etc. It takes time to get guys you traded for into town, suited up.
That being said, this is why the G League’s two-way contracts make so much sense. Teams in the NBA can grab players from for a short stint if something like a trade or injury happens, and it works for both sides. This undetermined pair will get some minutes with Cleveland and take some valuable experience back down to the G League where they can build on their games.
The Cavaliers won’t need this solution for long. Their new players should get everything squared away before the game after they face the Atlanta Hawks. But, it’s a great opportunity for their G League players.
