One of the most iconic plays in NBA history may never have happened without a difficult halftime conversation, according to longtime LeBron James agent Rich Paul.

Speaking on the latest episode of Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul, Paul reflected on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ historic comeback in the 2016 NBA Finals and credited former coach Tyronn Lue for challenging James at a critical moment.

The Cavaliers entered Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors with a chance to complete an unprecedented comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. Cleveland ultimately secured a 93-89 victory, highlighted by James’ legendary chasedown block on Andre Iguodala in the closing minutes.

According to Paul, that moment can be traced back to a halftime conversation between Lue and James.

“LeBron didn’t have the best half,” Paul said. “But in the moment T Lue really challenged him in that locker room. I wasn’t in the locker room but T Lue told me and obviously LeBron told me that he challenged him and was like, Hey basically tell him I need more from you, like literally I need more from you.”

Paul said the exchange demonstrated the trust and accountability that existed between Lue and the Cavaliers’ superstar.

“And when you’re able to talk to your best player and don’t get me wrong, he didn’t take it well in the beginning cause obviously you’re going to get defensive…”

Paul then made a bold claim about the impact of that conversation.

“I’m telling you right now Max, I really believe this if T Lue does not have that conversation with LeBron in that locker room and challenge him in that locker room. We don’t get the block.”

The block remains one of the defining moments of James’ career. With less than two minutes remaining in a tie game, James sprinted the length of the floor to reject Iguodala’s layup attempt, preserving the deadlock and helping Cleveland maintain momentum in the game’s final stretch.

Paul believes the play reflected James’ response to being challenged by his coach.

“If you really watch where he took off from for the block, it’s almost like, I’m gonna show you.”

The Cavaliers went on to capture the first championship in franchise history, ending Cleveland’s 52-year title drought and cementing the 2016 team among the most memorable champions in league history.

A decade later, the chasedown block continues to be celebrated as one of the greatest defensive plays ever recorded. Paul’s comments add another layer to the story, suggesting that Lue’s willingness to challenge James may have played a significant role in creating one of the NBA’s most enduring moments.
