Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton has had a very solid rookie season, averaging 16.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists over 31.7 minutes per game while shooting 43% from the floor, 40.8% from three-point range, and 84.2% from the free-throw line. The Cavs youngster has been even better since the All-Star break, however, registering 20.9 points per game while making 47.7 percent of his field-goal attempts and 42.7 percent of his long-distance tries.
What’s more, Sexton has not missed a game all year long.
A Cavs team official said that Sexton’s consistency and improvement throughout the season are results of his outstanding work ethic:
“He’s a monster, monster worker,” said the official, according to Terry Pluto of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. “He has learned ‘Money Ball,’ driving or making 3-pointers. His improvement is incredible.”
Basically, the Cavs are telling Sexton to follow the James Harden model, which consists of either taking a three-pointer or trying to get to the basket to finish at the rim and/or draw fouls.
Harden has certainly made a nice career out of it, so it only makes sense for other teams to tell their guards to try the same thing.
Cleveland currently owns a record of 19-62 heading into its final game of the 2018-19 campaign against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night, but the Cavaliers have shown marked improvement throughout the season, and with youngsters like Sexton and Cedi Osman looking more and more like pieces to build with, Cleveland might not be in such bad shape going forward, after all.
Of course, it would also be nice to land the No. 1 overall pick to have a shot at Zion Williamson.
