LeBron James is in the postseason for the 13th straight season of his 15-year NBA career, having gotten to the NBA Finals a record seven straight times.
This playoff run represents yet another shot to increase that record number, but The King noted his now iconic streak wasn’t something he set out to do.
“How important is it to me? It’s important to me to try to compete for a championship every year,” James said, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “It’s not like it was a goal of mine coming into the NBA, saying ‘Let’s have a Finals streak.’ It just happened that way because I prepared myself and the teams were very prepared and good and talented to be able to compete for championships. It’s just been a product of it.”
Yet this season, James has found himself doing most of the heavy lifting, scoring 70 points between his first two games of the postseason, while the next highest scorer on his team is Kevin Love with 24 through Games 1 and 2.
Sadly, the Cleveland Cavaliers star has his worst supporting cast of his career, and while the sample size is very short — it’s evident that James putting out huge performances is a definite need for the Cavs to win games, even in the first round of the postseason.
James’ streak might be in danger of coming to an end if this team’s supporting players don’t pick it up soon and give him some help at both ends in the near future.
