LeBron James pulled out the classic Dikembe Mutombo finger wag gesture when he delivered a game-clinching block on Dennis Schroder in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ most recent game against the Atlanta Hawks.
Seeing as they were in Atlanta, which was Mount Mutombo’s home for five seasons, might that have been a premeditated move by the Cavs star to do the old finger wag in Deke’s old stomping ground? Apparently not, according to LeBron James himself when he was asked about it.
“No, I don’t do intentional stuff, but that’s pretty cool if you want to write that. It makes sense.”
James might actually be telling the truth when he says the finger wag wasn’t intentional. He seemed legitimately surprised when the Atlanta-Mutombo connection was pointed out to him, as if it was truly the first time it had even crossed his mind.
While James is far more calculating than he says he is, the finger wag was likely just a heat-of-the-moment thing after he came up with a huge play to effectively seal the win for his team. The fact that it was a great block meant it warranted the old finger wag, which has become the go-to gesture anytime someone comes up with a big rejection.
