Earlier this week, it was announced that Cleveland Cavaliers star forward LeBron James has made the decision to trademark the phrase “Nothing is given. Everything is earned.”

The phrase has been put to use for his new I Promise school that is located in Akron, Ohio. It had been first used during the 2014 Sports Illustrated article that revealed his return back to the Cavs. According to Nikki Goel of ClutchPoints, James stated on Wednesday morning that it is a phrase which holds personal meaning to him.

This was simply another way for LeBron James to draw more connection to Akron while promoting his new school in the city. Throughout his career, he has been quite vocal about his upbringing and the hard work it has taken for him to get this point as a professional basketball player.

James’ childhood has been well documented as he was raised by his mother while struggling to get by financially, but his hard work on the court has led to him to becoming the most popular player in the league. The Cavs forward has also seen his close friends experience as much success, most notably Rich Paul who heads the Klutch Sports Group agency, which represents many of the league’s top players.

Ultimately, it was just another symbol that LeBron James can attach to something he helped create for the betterment of his hometown.
