The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Friday that All-Star power forward Kevin Love underwent successful surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City to address continued left foot symptoms.
Love, 30, will undergo an extended period of treatment and rehabilitation, with the timeline for his return to basketball activity updated in approximately six weeks.
The Cavs signed Kevin Love to a four-year, $120 million extension in the offseason, meaning the franchise will now pay the stretch forward roughly $145 million over the next five seasons.
In four games this season, Love is averaging 19.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 32.3 percent from the field, 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line. The Cavs are 1-7 on the season and just recently fired head coach Tyronn Lue.
Has Kevin Love played his last game with the Cavs? It’s very possible. Love can’t be traded until the middle of January, but many around the league believe the Cavs will look to move him around that time so they can acquire young players and draft picks for the future.
Cleveland wasn’t going to contend for a playoff spot this season with a healthy Kevin Love; that’s just the reality of the situation. Now that Love is out for the foreseeable future, Cavs general manager Koby Altman needs to embark on a rebuild and look to the future.
